8 Misconceptions about Mobile Massage Therapy

Updated: Oct 26, 2023

The very thought about inviting a stranger into your home, let alone to touch your body while you’re in an extremely vulnerable state, can definitely feel like a full on anxiety attack, if you are new to massage therapy.

However, we invite you to put your mind at ease, and rest assured that massage has been around for thousands of years, yet unfortunately many of the myths about massage are still widespread.

We’re going to debunk all those misconceptions in order to give you a clear picture of whether massage (and in our specific case, an in-home massage or home massage services) is actually good for you.

Now you may have been online one day and typed something along the lines of:

“full body massage in home near me”, "in home massage San Diego", "mobile massage San Diego", "mobile massage Dallas", "private massage therapist Phoenix AZ" or "home massage therapy” into the google search bar, yes?

If so, you have come to the right place as we are here to answer some of the top questions about massage therapy...

Let us begin, shall we?

Mobile Massage Orange County, CA.

Myth 1: Any pain you feel the next day is a good sign of an effective massage session.

The Truth: When you hear the word or think about "Pain" (although highly subjective) as each and everyone of us has our personal pain threshold and tolerance, what pain most certainly is not, is an indication of the quality of a massage.

Some people will experience some pain, soreness or mild discomfort after their first massage, if it's been quite awhile since they last had a professional massage or if they have been living a sedentary lifestyle for a while. Along with that, if a massage therapist is working diligently to break down lactic acid in your body (which can lead to some tingling felt in your muscles), or if the client is not drinking enough water or eating high water containing fruits and vegetables in order to stay properly hydrated.

However, if you do get regular monthly massages, there is a good chance you won't experience any pain or discomfort the next day. Yet, you should never be so sore that you're in bed the next day or unable to perform your daily tasks or usual routine.

Myth 2: You have to get through the pain or discomfort or the mobile massage isn't effective.

The Truth: There is absolutely no truth in this misconception. If a massage therapist hurting a client, then that can be considered an assault, and is completely unacceptable -- none of our trained team members ever push the limit with a client's needs for comfort and the correct ( determined by the client ) amount of pressure to be used during the massage session.

There is a HUGE difference between pain and discomfort and you must be able to distinguish between them. If you feel uncomfortable, then that is somewhat unacceptable as there is a lot of movement of your tissues and muscles, which may cause you to feel the physical release in the tension and/or the energy shifts of your chakras and meridians, but outright pain -- never.

If your massage practitioner inflicts pain on you, say so immediately. Many clients are under the impression that a massage practitioner knows when something hurts or if they are applying too much pressure to your liking, yet if this ever occurs at any point during your session then something needs to be said, as you should always fell 100% comfortable to communicate with your massage practitioner.

Myth 3: As long as I am feeling well, there is no need to consume water after massage therapy.

The Truth: It is beneficial to drink water after a massage, as it reduces any pain or discomfort and allows the fluids moved around from your muscles and tissues to be flushed out from your system throughout the day after your mobile massage.

One way to increase your chances of not experiencing any pain or discomfort the day after your massage session is to increase your water intake after your reservation. It is also very helpful to consume vegetables and fruits that are high in water content. As water and hydrating fruits and vegetables helps remove a lot of the waste that the massage practitioner has processed from your muscles into the circulation.

However, don't think stopping at the local bar or the adult "watering hole" after your massage session is a good idea. You should absolutely never drink alcohol ( even wine ) or smoke ( even cannabis ) after receiving a massage. Because massage increases circulation, so if you have consumed nicotine, cannabis and/or alcohol, then it may have a stronger effect after the massage session and could have adverse effects on your body and mental health/state.

Myth 4: Do not have a massage if you're pregnant or while you are breastfeeding / in any period of postpartum.

The Truth: A Prenatal or Postpartum massage therapy can be enjoyed in all trimesters of a normal pregnancy and may actually be of great benefit, as long as you have been given a health clearance from your primary medical practitioner, OBGYN or Midwife.

Many people believe that having a massage while pregnant can induce labor, but the truth is that there isn’t any point in the body that can induce labor when you touch it ( as women, our bodies are quite intelligent and the baby will be born when your body knows it is the right time ). There is no way to induce labor, as we do not have control over the divine plan and life path of the baby while in utero. In fact, for normal pregnancies, massage therapy is perfectly safe and has proven to be incredibly wonderful and relaxing for both mother and baby during this special and sacred time.

Myth 5: If my massage therapist didn't ask me about my health history, I don't need to talk about it with them before or during our session.

The Truth: Before you schedule your mobile massage with Blissful touch Body + Reflexology, you will be guided to complete your new client in-take form, as it is absolutely imperative to disclose any and all past health history to your massage therapist about your personal medical history, including any health issues, surgeries and medications (both subscription, OTC or herbal supplements.)

The disclosure of your medical information is extremely important, for your health and safety and also to ensure you receive the best massage possible for your aliments. For instance, if you have heart disease, if you have stomach issues, if you have metal in your body, if you are taking antidepressants, if you took a pain reliever an hour before your appointment, we most certainly need to know. Such information will help your massage therapist to not only design a better massage therapy session for you, yet also to keep you safe and properly aligned with any of the techniques and modalities.

In short, even if your massage therapist doesn't ask you directly, we do retain a copy of your new client in-take form for future reference.

Myth 6: Massage therapy should only be performed when I am under an extreme amount of stress.

Truth: "Stress does not disappear, it accumulates. Therefore, it's important to incorporate a monthly massage into your routine."

Which is why we strongly suggest that you do not wait nor put off the importance of your self-care.

When we prioritize ourselves and make a concerted effort to make our health ( mental, emotional and physical ) a priority, nothing but good can come from it, as you will be more at ease, calmer throughout the day and less reactive to negativity.

Our energy, time and attention are the only three things that have the greatest amount of influence in our lives and how we chose to spend them ( and with whom ) greatly impacts the outcome of our day-to-day living.

Myth 7: an In-home or mobile massage therapist isn’t really as good as going to a day spa.

Truth: The main thing to keep in mind with receiving a massage -- is your comfort.

Many people; especially since 2020, do not feel comfortable going to a public spa or massage center that has hundreds to thousands of people walking in and walking out of everyday.

However, we trust our fellow massage professionals within our industry to adhere to the proper health, safety and hygiene standards. Yet again, regardless of the health standards, the energy of a public establishment vs. the tranquility of your home is unmatched. In your home, office, hotel suite or vacation rental ( AirBnb, VRBO or Sonder ) you have the control to set the tone, monitor the energy you welcome and the frequency you invite into you sacred space.

These have been the driving forces behind why we are passionate about serving our clientele in the spaces they feel most comfortable and at ease -- which greatly adds to the overall massage experience.

Myth 8: Massages are best when performed at a certain time of the day.

Truth: Massage can safely and effectively be performed at any given time of the day. It really depends on you, your schedule and whenever you prefer to wind down after a long day at the office or after a riveting round of golf with friends. Which is why we began offering 24/7 mobile massage services for our clients as we have come to find that those in search of “mobile massage San Diego ca” and “24 hour mobile massage" were looking for a soothing and calming massage at a time that fit into their often time hectic schedules and sometimes demanding tasks and duties.
